Sunflower oil has been scarce and expensive for months.
Edeka offers a way to take care of yourself.
But there is a catch.
Munich - The demand for certain products has led to wild scenes in German supermarkets and discounters in Germany in recent months.
Sunflower oil in particular was the target of many customers, hamster purchases were often observed - sometimes this ended with a police operation.

Sunflower oil is obtained from sunflowers.
Namely from the so-called achenes (single-seeded independant fruits) of the plant.
In addition to being used as cooking oil, sunflower oil is also used in the production of biodiesel.

This meant that some shelves were completely deserted.
And as a result, tough measures had to be taken: the sale of sunflower oil was limited to one or a few bottles.
In addition, prices rose sharply.
The Ukraine crisis also contributed to the drastic price increase for sunflower oil.
But the excessive buying behavior of some German supermarket customers did the rest.
Cooking oil became “liquid gold”.
You get the sunflower oil "almost for free", an Aldi customer recently mocked the high prices.
A Twitter user posted a picture from an Edeka branch.
On it you can see a shelf with numerous sunflowers that stand directly above the oil bottles.
A sign reads: "Sunflower oil for home cultivation from 2023." Each pot contains a plant and costs 2.99 euros.
Edeka: Sunflower oil offer for self-sufficiency - "You need seeds from 60 sunflowers"
Avoiding the run on sunflower oil, which is now expensive, as a self-supporter - is that the solution?
It's probably not that simple.
At least in terms of cost.
"By the way, you need the seeds of 60 sunflowers for one liter of oil," wrote the Twitter user about his snapshot from the Edeka branch.

You would have to buy 60 sunflowers for 2.99 euros each, so you would have to spend a total of 179.40 euros.
For just one liter of sunflower oil.
Incidentally, any crop failures are not yet included in this calculation.
Almost 180 euros for the liter of sunflower oil.
The current prices for sunflower oil, which are often around four to five euros, seem like a bargain.
Especially since there are also reports of cheap sunflower oil offers, as recently from a Rewe customer.
