Efrat Gush reminds us that it is also possible to sing words with meaning | Israel today

2022-05-24T05:52:59.243Z

12 years since her last project, the singer returns with "Great Power", a strong single not only in terms of production and style, but especially in choosing to bring to the forefront an exposed and complex text, which unlike its industry peers, does not amount to a heap of shallow and unrelated words

12 years is a significant time in a person's life, but they are no less victorious in the life of a musician, who has fought all his life to remain relevant.

In 2010, Efrat Gush released her latest mini-album "Ah Ah Ah Love", which many remember as the particularly successful theme song, but it also contained other worthy songs, such as "Lighthouse".

These have established her in consciousness as one of the most interesting singers and composers we have here.

But it has been more than a decade since Gush lived alongside the Israeli cultural consciousness, and not really as part of it.

Yes, she took part in various projects, including a joint show with Jonathan Geffen.

But when it came to her new creation - it was about boredom.

And that’s weird, given her not-quite-old age and the fact that the previous decade was one of the most refreshing voices operating between us, and not just in vocal terms.

Gush is a complex persona, a star in her being.

Its absence only highlighted the lack of such in the Israeli pop landscape.

"Great Power," the new song she released this week, does a decent job of reminding us who it is.

Musically it is catchy and somewhat reminiscent of Massive Attack material.

It's mostly a function of a successful chorus, but not one we've never heard before.

It is the lyrics of the song that make everything that is played on the radio stations these days sound like a pile of words.

Efrat Gush - a great force

"God knows I tried endless times, and endless times I failed too," sang Gush, in a clear reference to the fight she waged over alcohol addiction, which she recently revealed (which is also noted in a press release attached to the song).

"One can go crazy from the pressing need to make an effort," and also "the pain is temporary, the surrender is eternal, the resistance destructive."

It’s hard to think of the last time a pop singer released a song that was so bare, yes, and so painful, that it didn’t deal with a broken heart or a romantic cliché.

How many singers do you know who will admit out loud "I'm dead scared" and "I finally want to feel worthy of everyone and everything around me. For a long time now despair and shame have perpetuated the parting between me and the rest of the world"?

Only the courage to be exposed in this way is commendable.

Were we wrong?
