Marvel had proposed the implementation of a "Spider-Man" game to both Microsoft and Sony.
"Spider-Man" and the spin-off "Spider-Man: Miles Morales" are among the biggest PlayStation hits of recent years.
Apparently it was a real stroke of luck for Sony that the friendly neighborhood spider appeared exclusively for PS4 and PS5.
According to Marvel Games boss Jay Ong, the game series was first proposed to Microsoft for Xbox consoles.
"Spider-Man": Microsoft wanted to focus on its own Xbox title
Ong's testimony appeared in the book The Ultimate History of Video Games, Volume 2 by author Steven Kent (via

.
In it, he explained that Marvel Games was looking for a new video game publisher after ending its collaboration with Activision.
Microsoft and Sony were shortlisted to make Spider-Man exclusives.
And according to Jay Ong, Microsoft preferred
to focus on developing its own game franchises
.
Microsoft's strategy was to focus on its own franchises.
They declined.

Looking back at the success of PlayStation games, that was probably a mistake.
The first Spider-Man title, released in 2018, was a sensational success.
Critics and players loved it and the game
sold over 20 million copies
.
The 2020 spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold over 6 million copies.
Spider-Man 2 in the works as well as a brand new Wolverine game
So Insomniac Games, the developer studio behind the PlayStation implementations, did a great job.
It is therefore not surprising that the studio is developing the next part with "Spider-Man 2".
The game is scheduled for release in 2023.
In addition, Insomniac is still working on Wolverine - another brand new Marvel title.
However, it is still unclear when this will be launched.
