(ANSA) - REGGIO CALABRIA, 25 MAY - The first section of the Federal Supreme Court (Stf) of Brazil has confirmed the authorization for the extradition to Italy of the drug trafficker of the 'Ndrangheta Rocco Morabito, considered one of the most wanted criminals in the world.
Agência Brasil writes it.
The agency recalled that Morabito was arrested in May last year by the Federal Police in João Pessoa and then transferred to the Federal Penitentiary in Brasilia, where he has since been detained.
In March of this year, the same Brazilian court had already granted approval to the extradition but yesterday reiterated its decision by dismissing an appeal by Morabito's defense lawyers who had supported the illegality of the procedures.
The judges unanimously voted to reject the application and ordered the end of the extradition process.
Now the federal government will be in charge of handing over the boss to the Italian authorities.
Rocco Morabito, 56, boss of the 'Ndrangheta, is considered one of the most important international drug traffickers in the world.
The extradition request was made by the Italian Ministry of Justice on the basis of a prison order issued by the Reggio Calabria Attorney General for the execution of the sentences that were administered to the drug trafficker.
Morabito, in particular, must dismiss the sentences imposed on him by the Courts of Appeal of Palermo, Milan and Reggio Calabria and made definitive by the confirmation by the Court of Cassation.
The drug trafficker is a native of Africo, the Aspromonte center at the crossroads of the most powerful gangs of the Reggio 'Ndrangheta, from where he then extended his criminal interests practically worldwide.
