The demand for employees is high - but companies are having more and more problems finding suitable staff.

But in which sectors is the most searched?

The number of open jobs has been breaking all records for months.

The number of job offers on

StepStone.de

reached a new high in March 2022.

The number of jobs increased by 55 percent compared to the already very strong March 2021. In areas such as human resources (+85 percent), logistics (+82 percent), care (+70 percent) and trades (+67 percent), the Demand even above average.

For employees, this means that they increasingly have a choice

.

"Companies are desperately looking for new employees in all areas - despite current uncertainties due to the Ukraine war and the pandemic," says Dr.

Tobias Zimmermann, labor market expert at StepStone.

“In the next few years, the number of open jobs will continue to rise because

the labor force is shrinking dramatically

.

The problem of the future is no longer unemployment, but unemployment.

That will fundamentally change the balance of power – in favor of the employees.”

Unemployment can be expensive for companies

If the number of open jobs increases and at the same time there are fewer and fewer available workers, this means that companies will find it more difficult to find employees.

“Companies are already seeing a drop in sales because it takes them a long time to fill a vacancy.

In the future, companies will therefore have to invest much more in rapid recruiting and long-term employee retention.

This is the only way they can ensure their competitiveness in times of unemployment,” says Zimmermann.

According to a new StepStone analysis, the “cost of vacancy” – i.e. the

costs that a vacancy causes for the company – is

29,000 euros on average

.

In companies with more than 250 employees, the costs are even more than 73,000 euros.

The empty desk is particularly expensive in the health sector, where the "cost of vacancy" is around 37,700 euros on average, as well as in IT (37,300 euros) and in sales (36,600 euros).

But unemployment also costs companies a lot of money in the trades (32,600 euros) and in production (30,800 euros).
