The federal government has decided to extend the deadline for filing tax returns again.
This should serve as a relief for citizens in the corona pandemic.
Actually, the deadline for filing the tax return is typically July 31st.
Due to the corona pandemic, the federal government wants to offer citizens and the economy relief and has extended the deadline for tax returns for 2021.
Anyone who still has to submit a tax return via the tax advisor for the year 2020 will also receive an extension of the deadline.
When do I have time to submit the 2021 tax return?
The deadline for filing the tax return for tax year 2021 would normally be July 31, 2022. Since that day falls on a Sunday this year, you would have had until August 1 to submit the forms.
The federal government has now extended this deadline to
October 31, 2022
.
This gives you an additional three months to take care of your tax return if you do it yourself.
Those who have the 2021 tax return made by a
tax consultant or the income tax assistance association
still have time until
the end of August 2023
.
Actually, the deadline would have expired at the end of February 2023.
Extension of the deadline for the 2020 tax return
Due to the deadline extensions by the federal government, some
tax returns for the year 2020
even have more time.
Those who take care of it themselves already had to submit the forms – but those who wanted to submit them through a tax advisor now have
until August 31, 2022
to do so.
Actually, the deadline would have expired at the end of May 2022.
From 2025, the federal government wants to return to normality - and the old deadlines - as reported by the
Handelsblatt
.
An overview of the new deadlines for filing tax returns:
without a tax advisor | with tax consultant | |
---|---|---|
Tax return 2021 | October 31, 2022 | August 31, 2023 |
Tax return 2020 | October 31, 2021 (already expired) | August 31, 2022 |
The new deadline for filing tax returns only affects those who are required to file a tax return.
This includes, for example, employees who receive income without wage tax deduction or tax-free wage replacement benefits of more than 410 euros as well as spouses with a combination of tax classes III and V or IV/IV with a registered factor.
Anyone who voluntarily submits a tax return can do so four years after the end of a tax year.
