After several years, the Onken brand is no longer available in Germany.

In June 2022, the products should no longer be on the shelves of Lidl, Rewe and Co.

Food – yoghurt and quark: Onken brand products have a long tradition in German supermarkets.

However, the group has now decided to no longer offer its products in Germany.

From the end of June 2022, the products will disappear from the refrigerated shelves at Lidl, Rewe and Edeka, the parent company Emmi announced on Tuesday (May 10).

However, the withdrawal is limited to the German market.

Lidl, Rewe and Edeka: traditional brand disappears - Onken sees no growth prospects

In the UK, for example, Onken will continue to offer its fruit yoghurts.

According to its own statements, the brand is one of the leading providers here.

The group gave several reasons for withdrawing from the shelves of Lidl, Rewe and Edeka in Germany:

  • According to the company, there are no growth prospects for Onken brand products in Germany.

  • In Germany, the market for yoghurt and quark is highly competitive.

  • The parent company Emmi would like to focus the company on more profitable growth segments such as ready-to-drink coffee and specialty cheeses.

The Onken brand has been in German supermarkets for over 80 years.

The brand, founded in 1940, has been part of the Emmi Group since 2011, according to the brand's website.

It remains to be seen whether there will be new products from the Emmi Group in the future and whether Make Onken will make a comeback.

The trademark rights remain with the Emmi Group in Germany, as the group announced.
