With calls for help, a 72-year-old triggered an extensive search operation in the Zittau Mountains on the Czech border.

A witness heard the calls near the so-called badger holes in Oybin (Görlitz district) on Tuesday afternoon and went on a search with other people, the police said.

When the calls stopped half an hour later, the man informed the rescue control center.

In addition to the mountain rescue service, a large contingent of police went on the search.

According to the police, a police helicopter, a search dog squadron and several patrol cars were used.

Later, a dog unit from the German Red Cross was added.

In the evening, the senior appeared at the search site.

The man said he slipped on wet leaves and slid down a small slope and then called for help.

He lost his orientation, but was able to free himself from his situation, it said.

The man from the island of Rügen suffered minor injuries in the fall.
