The US rock band Aerosmith has canceled a series of concerts in Las Vegas because of frontman Steven Tyler's addiction problems.

The rocker had relapsed and went into withdrawal of his own accord, the band said on Instagram.

In the run-up to the planned performances, Tyler underwent foot surgery and took painkillers.

That led to a relapse, the statement said.

Tyler sought treatment "to focus on his health and recovery."

The musicians are "devastated" for disappointing their fans.

They would have to cancel the Las Vegas performances planned for June and July.

As part of the "Deuces Are Wild" show, the band wanted to give two dozen concerts in the casino city from June to December.

Now she comforted the fans to September: "We will inform you as soon as possible about further updates", can be read on Instagram.

All tickets already purchased for canceled concerts will therefore be refunded.

Tyler has been open about addiction issues in the past.

"Sobriety was a foreign word for us," he said in an interview with SPIEGEL.

In 2009, Tyler was treated at a clinic for chronic pain and addiction to painkillers.

Aerosmith was founded in Boston in 1970.

In addition to "Crazy", the five-piece band's biggest hits include "Dream On", "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing", "Walk This Way" and "Cryin'".
