The drama film "Kadima Kadima" starring Joaquin Phoenix, which won an Oscar for his role in the film "Joker" in 2019, will be released in theaters today.

In the film, Phoenix plays Johnny, a wandering radio reporter who is in the midst of an investigative report for American public radio, where he works.

He interviews children from different parts of the U.S. and asks them about their opinions and their predictions for the future. But then he gets a call from his sister (Gabi Hoffman, "Transparent") who needs help with her 9-year-old son, Jesse (played by young actor Woody) Norman) .Joney is forced to take care of the boy while his sister is required for other burning matters. When Johnny's job requires him to return - he takes Jesse with him to New York, and the boy accompanies him to meetings with various interviewees.

The film was screened at festivals last fall, and won critical acclaim.

Both Phoenix and boy Norman received a commendation for their performance in the film, and director Mike Mills, who wrote the script, was also praised.

Mills, 56, began his career as a video clip director for bands such as Air, Palp and musician Moby.

At the same time he incorporated a cinematic work of short films.

In the last decade, he has begun to focus on full-length films, most notably "Beginners" starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer, which was released in 2011.

The late Plummer, the then-82-year-old "Sounds of Music" star, won an Oscar for his role in the film, making him the oldest Oscar winner.

Another Mills film was "20th Century Women" with Annette Benning and Al Penning, released in 2017.

Mills was nominated for an Oscar in the original screenplay category for this film.

At the end of the premiere of "Kadima Kadima" Mills said that "I feel that my best chance to make a good film is to come from a familiar place, with a subject I have a personal acquaintance with. The idea came from my son. He has funny thoughts and I thought about adult and child The different worldviews through which I reached children of his age, their parents and teachers - and a whole world was revealed to me.

"Movies take you on a journey, including in the audience's reactions to them. I can't explain why something personal of mine that came to the screen made others react in a certain way. It's a shock and it's exciting, and it makes me cry. That's what cinema does to a person."

One of the main artistic choices in the film is that it was shot in black and white.

According to Mills, "Non-color films are an extraordinary breed and I always wanted to test it. I love black-and-white cinema. It gives the atmosphere of a documentary, a feeling that everything is real. On the other hand, it also gives a sense of a fairy tale "I wanted this contrast to intensify and I also wanted to convey intimacy. It's one of the effects of black and white photography."
