The absence on the national territory of an adequate network of treatment plants forces our country to export large quantities of waste from industrial activities every year.

This waste abroad is transformed into new raw materials and energy, and the plant engineering gap costs the country about 1 billion euros a year.

The complaint emerges from a report presented by Assoambiente (Association of Environmental Services and Circular Economy Enterprises).

Special waste, net of that deriving from the construction sector, in 2019 (the last year for which data are available) amounted to almost 111 million tons.

In 2019, over 4 million tons of special waste were exported, in 50% of cases destined for neighboring countries such as Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland and Slovenia.

Germany received 800,000 tons.

23% of exported waste was destined for incineration or energy recovery plants, 14% was sent to landfills or sent to other disposal operations, the rest was recycled.

According to Assoambiente, already today there is a plant need exceeding 10 million tons of waste / year and a cumulative requirement in the five years (2021-2025) of approximately 34 million tons.

Not closing this gap means selling abroad economic value equal to approximately 1 billion euro per year, net of losses in terms of employment, production of raw materials and energy and tax revenues.

The only failure to produce energy that can be generated from waste destined to be "waste-to-energy" abroad can be estimated between 330,000 and 400,000 MWh per year.

For a country like Italy that imports energy, this translates into an annual cost, at market values, of between 40 and 60 million euros.
