Cases of monkeypox are increasing worldwide.

According to experts, general smallpox vaccination also protects against the virus.

Munich – The monkeypox virus is currently spreading in Europe and the USA.

The first infections with the virus have also been confirmed in Germany.

However, infected adults can expect a mild course.

The disease should also heal on its own in most cases.

Although according to experts there is no danger of the next pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) has already called an emergency meeting.

In addition, it is currently being investigated how well the general smallpox vaccination helps against the virus.

Monkeypox in Germany: Does the smallpox vaccination help against the virus?

A total of around 130 cases and suspected cases of the monkeypox virus have now been confirmed worldwide, including the first infections in Germany, and the trend is rising.

The virologist Prof. Gerd Sutter gives the all-clear regarding a pandemic spread.

At the same time, however, one must prepare better in the future - similar to Corona and the monkeypox virus - "that new viruses keep appearing as pathogens".

The advantage of the monkeypox virus: There is already an effective vaccine.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, general smallpox vaccination also protects against the monkeypox virus.

The US health authority Centers for Disease Control (CDC) assumes an 85 percent effectiveness against monkeypox.

Up until 1975 there was compulsory vaccination for one-year-olds in the Federal Republic of Germany, which was abolished in 1982 in the GDR.

According to information from the ministry's report, the federal government is said to have stockpiled about 100 million doses of smallpox vaccine.

According to the CDC, vaccination can also be helpful four days after infection and protect against worsening of symptoms.

In Germany, it is currently being clarified to what extent smallpox vaccination should be recommended for high-risk patients and contact persons.

The second corona booster has so far only been recommended for four groups of people.

Smallpox vaccination: This is why vaccinated people over the age of 50 have a scar on their arm

Human smallpox has been considered eradicated worldwide since 1980.

Since then, fewer and fewer people have been vaccinated against it.

However, most of the over 50-year-olds in Germany still received the smallpox vaccination and have had a scar on their upper arm ever since.

Doctors shot the children in the upper arm with a vaccination pistol.

So it came to a "planned" infection at the scratch site where pustules formed.

The infection eventually left the familiar scar.

At that time, vaccination was the only way to fight smallpox.

Finally, according to Sutter, there is also “the possibility of therapy with an approved orthopox virus-specific drug” against the monkeypox virus.
