Do you have a big test, a difficult conversation or a stressful day ahead of you?
There is something your partner can do for you easily.
A new study has found that a hug can make a big difference for women.
Unfortunately, the effect is not so strong when it comes to men.
Researchers analyzed how 76 people responded to stress after a hug from a romantic partner, in a study published last week in the journal PLOS One.
Women who were privileged to embrace their significant other showed a decrease in cortisol production - a stress hormone - compared to those who did not.

"It's not surprising that touch helps regulate the body," senior research author Julian Pakheiser, a postdoctoral researcher at the Dutch Institute of Neuroscience, told CNN.
Hugging a loved one releases a neurotransmitter called oxytocin, often called the "love hormone," which reduces cortisol levels.
This response, along with social support, blocks stress, according to the study.

In 2017 a study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, found that while sexual contact does make us happier, there is something better than it.
The researchers, from the University of Friborg in Switzerland and the University of Toronto Mississauga in Canada, found that the hug and affection we shower on the couple contributes to a long-term sense of happiness and satisfaction from life.

So why do men not see the same decrease in cortisol?
It's hard to say, the researchers admitted. "It could be a social factor, where many of the men may not have felt good about the hugs because they are socially perceived as unusual or embarrassing for men," Pakheiser said.
It may also be related to the difference in touch receptors in the biology of men and women, he added.
The difference in outcome was unpredictable and is not necessarily the last word on the matter, he said.
"Just because we did not find the effect in men, (does not mean) that it is not there," Pakheiser wrote.
"The impact could just be smaller and just not detected."
“A simple tip would be to hug your spouse, relatives or friends if you know they are dealing with stressful situations soon,” Pakheiser said.
If they want the hug, of course.
