When we think of the mattress, we generally have in mind a thick model that is installed on a box spring.
However, if you ask a Japanese person what a mattress looks like to him, he may describe a thin mattress that can be folded to save space: it is a futon.
This bedding, still not widespread in Europe, still has its followers.

What is a futon?
In Japanese, the word "futon" means "cotton mattress".
It designates a mattress less than 10 cm thick, flexible enough to be folded.
The Japanese who use it tend to position it on the ground, on a tatami which then acts as a bed base.
The advantage of the futon is that it allows you to sleep in a small living space: when it's time to go to bed, all you have to do is put your bed on the floor and, the next day, put it away in a closet, for example.
The futon is much more comfortable than a floor mat and faster to set up than an inflatable mattress, which helps to make it a very popular spare bed.
The futon, as comfortable as a real mattress?
If the futon has its followers, it is however difficult to imagine replacing a classic mattress with this alternative.
The mattress, combined with a “real” box spring, remains more comfortable over time!
However, for a short time, the futon remains an absolutely fine sleeping solution.
Do not hesitate to try the experience if you have the opportunity one day!
