Some shrubs need pruning in May at the latest in order to sprout vigorous flowers or to stay in shape.

Which shrubs and trees are next?

Gardening is in full swing in May.

After the ice saints, all summer flowers and vegetables can finally go outside.

But the pruning shears don't rest either, because after the early bloomers in April ,

some trees and shrubs also tolerate a strong pruning in

May .

In the following overview we explain which trees and shrubs you need to get in shape for the summer and which cutting technique you need to use.

In May, trees and shrubs like boxwood can be pruned nicely.

Cutting trees in May: which plants need pruning now

  • Rosemary:

In order for the Mediterranean subshrub to grow vigorously and not wither, it is important to cut it regularly.

    The pruning

    always takes place after flowering

, which can be from the end of April to May, depending on the region.

At this time, rosemary can also be multiplied wonderfully.

If you want to cut the

    Salvia rosmarinus

in late winter or spring, you can of course do so, but then you have to do without a flowering shrub.

  • Bonsai pine: So-called

    garden

bonsai are very popular in Japan

, but the topiary trees are also finding more and more fans in this country.

Garden bonsai are pines (or other trees) about two meters high, whose crown is shaped into dreamlike shapes.

To keep them from getting out of shape, the fresh shoots have to be trimmed every year.

The easiest way to do this is to break through the so-called "candles", i.e. the fresh shoots, with your fingers.

They are still soft enough for this until mid-May, later they are too lignified - then only the pruning shears will help.

However, the pines often appear a bit "mutilated" afterwards.

  • Weigela:

In order for shrubs like the weigela to continue to flower and not grow old, pruning is necessary every two to three years.

    The best time is

    after flowering from around mid-May

    .

To do this, cut out the oldest branches with pruning shears as close to the ground as possible.

However, only in the places where new long shoots follow - otherwise the weigela will wither over time.

  • However, be careful when cutting, because at this time of year only gentle topiary cuts or grooming cuts are allowed.

    Anyone who

radically puts their hedges, shrubs or other trees on sticks

between March 1st and September 30th faces severe fines of up to 100,000 euros.

    Prune topiary from May

Not only the garden bonsai tolerate a pruning from May.

    Other

    topiaries

, such as the boxwood, also retain their beautiful shape through this care measure, whether as a cone, cuboid or spiral.

According to the Federal Gardening and Landscaping Association (BGL), the

best time for topiary is from mid-May to the end of June

    .

In May, on the other hand, you should wait to mow the lawn.
