Since Steffi Graf ended her active tennis career, she has rarely been seen in public.
But that was never desirable for the 52-year-old.
"Basically, I have little need for publicity," Graf told Vogue Germany magazine, on whose current cover she can be seen.
"Even during my career, my privacy was very important to me, which could have something to do with the fact that I was in the limelight at such a young age," said the former number one in the world.
Social media a »must«?
In times of social media, many people grew up with a new form of publicity.
Young people could also gain self-confidence from it.
"But the constant desire to communicate, this public awareness and dealing with it have become almost a must," said Graf.
»It has definitely become more difficult to concentrate on the essentials, to find the right balance and balance.«
Steffi Graf dominated the tennis world in the late 1980s and 1990s.
She is a seven-time Wimbledon champion, has a total of 22 triumphs in Grand Slam tournaments and was number one in the world for 377 weeks.
She rarely gives detailed interviews and rarely makes public appearances.
She lives in the USA with her husband, ex-tennis pro Andre Agassi, 52.
The two have a son and a daughter.
