There is a lack of concepts, staff, and psychological support: teachers' representatives complain that schools are poorly prepared for the integration of children who fled to Germany before the war in Ukraine.

The teachers' unions have warned of the poor conditions for the integration of Ukrainian children in German schools and called on politicians to take action.

"With a view to the coming school year, it must be ensured that the children and young people who have fled Ukraine are integrated into the regular classes at schools in Germany," said Maike Finnern, head of the Education and Science Union (GEW). , the editorial network Germany.

According to figures from the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) from mid-May, almost 115,000 children and young people from Ukraine are now attending German schools.

"Currently, the GEW still get information far too often that there are long waiting lists," said Maike Finnern.

"The holidays will start in the first federal states in a good five weeks." So far, there is no solution for the new school year in sight - the number of refugee children and young people could then possibly be much higher.

Welcome, intensive or language classes are an interim solution, said Finnern.

"After the traumatic experiences of war and flight, it is important to offer the students normality again and to enable social contact with their peers." However, this only works if regular, language and welcome classes are not completely overcrowded and the support measures run long term.

In urban areas in particular, the number of students in learning groups and classes is increasing, sometimes immensely.

The head of the Education and Training Association (VBE), Udo Beckmann, also told the RND: "The Conference of Ministers of Education is now called upon to plan ahead and to prepare the schools well for everything that can come." The school year in Ukraine is over May over, said Beckmann.

"It can be assumed that this will lead to a renewed sharp increase in refugee children and young people, since we know that some parents have delayed emigration to enable the children to finish the school year," said Beckmann.

Meanwhile, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has noticed a great deal of interest in integration courses for language and culture education among the Ukraine refugees.

So far, “more than 80,000 authorizations to participate have been granted within a few weeks,” reported the “Welt” with reference to the BAMF.

After receiving this entitlement, a placement test must be completed in order to determine the course offering that matches the level of education;

therefore, "naturally, a few weeks passed before the actual start of the course."

Around 17,000 Ukrainians are currently taking part in an integration course.

"The entire spectrum of society comes from the Ukraine," from academics to the unskilled, said Benjamin Beckmann, head of the BAMF integration course department.

»But almost all of them have good learning requirements, above all a good school education.

We don't need any literacy courses for them and practically no courses to learn duplicates.« According to Beckmann, 95 percent of the Ukraine refugees can start their integration course directly with the normal language course.
