Cat Language: The coo is a prompt to humans

Cats use cooing in different situations, but generally it can be said that it can always be seen as a positive signal.

In the cat language, for example, it is used as a happy greeting, also towards us humans.

Or when the cat feels particularly good, has something exciting in its sights or is having fun playing.

But the house tiger also uses the cooing to get attention.

The three most common reasons a cat coos are:

  • Because the cat is in heat

  • Because this is how the mother cat communicates with her babies

  • Because the cat wants to tell its human something

Cat Talk: Cats coo when they're in heat

By cooing, cats in heat want to draw the tomcat's attention and signal to the male animals that they are willing to mate.

Cat Language: Cat mothers coo at their kittens

Cats get to know cooing as babies because their mother uses it to communicate with their offspring.

For example, she coos because she wants to call her kittens to suckle them or ask them to eat later.

It is also believed that cooing is intended to calm the offspring.

From an early age, cats associate cooing with security.

Cat Language: Cooing when communicating with humans

Cats also coo when they want to communicate something to their human.

This, too, can have different meanings depending on the situation.

Most of the time she wants to ask people to do something, but sometimes she just wants to express her well-being.

Exactly what she wants is easily gleaned from a few clues from the animal.

If you understand your cat's body language, you can always interpret their wishes correctly and give them the attention they demand.

This is what cooing means in communication with humans:

  • If a cat coos at the person when he comes home, it is to be understood as a happy greeting.

  • If the cat coos in a relaxed mood, nudges the human with its head and strokes its legs, it probably wants to be petted.

  • If the cat coos in an excited and active mood, runs to its toy or even brings it, it wants to invite the human to play.

  • If the cat coos and walks towards the food bowl, it is a sign that it is hungry and wants something to eat.

  • Caution: cats sometimes coo when touched while sleeping and startled.

The house tigers don't like that very much and here the cooing means: "Why did you wake me up?" It is therefore better not to disturb sleeping cats.
