PADUA - 350 books to be evaluated, of which over thirty worthy of discussion: fifteen that ended up in contention for a painful vote that led to the fateful five.

These are the numbers of the 60th edition of the Campiello Prize, the result of a debate - the one that was held to choose the five that will be evaluated by the popular jury to choose the best among them on September 3 at the Fenice in Venice - calm, attentive, from which unanimously a positive opinion emerged on the quality of this year's writing and narrative.

The Aula Magna Galileo of the Palazzo del Bo of the University of Padua was the theater in which the jury expressed their votes and nominated the five finalists of the Campiello, considered among the most coveted literature prizes by writers.

The Jury of Literature,

chaired by Walter Veltroni, he promoted Antonio Pascale in the first round with 7 votes with "The fig leaf. Stories of trees, women, men" (Einaudi), in the third round with 8 votes Fabio Bacà with "Nova" (Adelphi), in the fifth round with 7 votes Daniela Ranieri with "Updated road map of all my kisses" (Ponte alle Grazie), in the seventh round with 7 votes Bernardo Zannoni with "My stupid intentions" (Sellerio), in the ballot with 7 votes Elena Stancanelli with "Il tuffatore" (The ship of Theseus).

During the selection, the jury also announced the winner of the Campiello Opera Prima Prize, a recognition given since 2004 to an author on his literary debut.

The prize was awarded to Francesca Valente "Other nothing to report" (Einaudi).

The Literary Jury was made up of authoritative personalities from the literary and academic world such as Pierluigi Battista, journalist and writer;

Federico Bertoni, Professor of Literary Criticism and Comparative Literature at the University of Bologna;

Daniela Brogi, professor of contemporary Italian literature at the University for Foreigners of Siena;

Silvia Calandrelli, director of Rai Cultura, and Edoardo Camurri, writer, author and television and radio host.

In an atmosphere of satisfaction, the president of the jury, Walter Veltroni, declared: "I am happy to have worked with these people of great human capacity and sympathy, who have given their contribution to the Award with great responsibility. difficult, it is for us and for all of society - he added -. First the pandemic,

and then the war, they gave us a sense of heaviness, put on a heavy coat.

It is precisely in these moments that culture takes on an even more particular value: that of giving back hope, because words are an essential tool for dialogue and respect for others.

And so, the work of a literary prize such as Campiello acquires an added value.

Today we have selected works whose quality will now be subjected to the judgment of readers;

it is precisely the mechanism of the double jury that guarantees even more the autonomy of the Prize ".
