It was the tattoos scattered on the body and recognized by his brother that solved the mystery of the corpse found on 2 May in an advanced state of decomposition in the Trentino woods of the Val di Fiemme.

This is Andrea Ghirardi, 44, originally from Villadose, in the province of Rovigo.

In the past he also had an experience in the French Foreign Legion.

He had enlisted in his early twenties, going on missions to the Horn of Africa, Djibouti, Guinea and other African countries.

An experience, which ended in 2014, which had profoundly marked him, and which could explain his end.

The body had been found by a hiker walking with his dog in an inaccessible and uncrowded area.

Among the few objects recovered in the vicinity of the man, who had built a makeshift shelter, there was a notebook, on which appeared the words "start of fasting", with a handwritten calendar starting from last July 30th.

The last date reported is October 4, 2021. At the bottom of the calendar the word "crematemi" was written.

To facilitate identification, the Carabinieri had released photos of the pieces of clothing found and of the tattoos on the corpse.

It will be the comparison of the DNA to give the official confirmation of his identity but there are few doubts, given the recognition of the drawings on the skin made by the family member, that it is Ghirardi himself.

"He made them - says his brother Riccardo, speaking from London where he moved to work at the British Museum - we were about 16 when he bought the tattoo machine: he wanted to experiment on me, I refused and then if he made them on himself ".

From Riccardo's words emerges the pain for the disappearance of a person who, despite the difficulties and constant life changes, had managed to emerge, to live a life out of the ordinary.

"He has always done extraordinary things, he had a crazy intelligence - he remembers -. He studied everything, was passionate about history and was fluent in four languages".

His brother hadn't worried about his absence, precisely because he used to be away even for long periods.

"The last time we met in October 2020, when he returned to Italy from Germany - concludes his brother -. At the end of August he said to my parents that he would go to Switzerland to find a job: he left with his backpack, leaving a home phone and passport ".
