(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 28 - To protect Ukraine's intangible cultural heritage, Unesco has decided to examine, with urgent procedure, the candidacy of Borscht, the Ukrainian traditional platform, in the List of Humanity's Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The candidacy, launched in 2019 and immediately contested by Russia, which claims the paternity of gastronomic specialties, should have been evaluated between 2023 and 2024. But the Unesco Committee for intangible cultural heritage has decided to bring the evaluation up to this year and to have to do it. because the element needs urgent safeguarding.
It is the first time ever that it will proceed in this way, it is specified by the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture which is based in Paris.
This decision was shared by the Unesco Evaluation Body, or the body of world experts chaired by the Italian Pier Luigi Petrillo.
By the end of June this body will have to express itself and, in the event of a positive evaluation, an extraordinary Unesco meeting has already been scheduled on 1 July to deliberate the registration of the culinary tradition in the List of world heritage of humanity.
