Many players expect more luck from winning the lottery.
For Ibi Roncaioli, the dream did not come true.
Toronto - A lottery win in Toronto (Canada) led to a family tragedy.
Ibi Roncaioli had hit the jackpot there with a friend some time ago.
The duo raked in 10 million Canadian dollars - approximately 7.5 million euros.
The women shared the lottery prize.
As a result, Roncaioli pocketed almost 4 million euros, reports the Toronto Star.
Her three sons received around half of the 4 million euros.
So the woman and her husband Joseph Rancaioli still had about 2 million euros from the lottery win.
With this sum, the two pensioners wanted to make a nice life.
After winning the lottery: woman drinks and takes drugs
But Ibi Rancaioli started throwing the money out the window, writes the Toronto Star.
The woman had become addicted to gambling.
She would have spent more time at the casino than with her husband.
The lottery winner is said to have drunk a lot and used drugs.
In the basement of her house she had a large pool and a sauna area built.
Then Ibi Rancaioli was found dead.
Her wounds would have indicated that she was given an injection.
According to the Toronto Star, the police identified her husband as the perpetrator.
He gave his wife an overdose of painkillers.
Joseph Rancaioli would have worked as a gynecologist all his life.
So he knew how to get the necessary funds and how to mix them.
After winning the lottery: sister cannot judge
During the court case, it turned out that Joseph Rancaioli could no longer watch his wife squander the lottery winnings.
He was sentenced to imprisonment for involuntary manslaughter.
It is questionable whether the 72-year-old will ever be able to enjoy freedom again in his life.
The victim's sister could not understand the verdict: "It was murder - and not negligent homicide," she said, according to the Toronto Star after the trial.
