Have you already got the travel bug?

Driving throughout Germany for only 9 euros from June 1 – actually sounds like a dream.

But there is a small catch.

Maybe you got the

9 euro ticket

already bought it, maybe you're still waiting until you actually need it.

One thing is certain, many people in Germany will make use of the 9-euro ticket that was launched as part of the federal government's relief package.

Not only

subscribers and commuters

benefit from the cheap tickets in public transport.

One or the other is sure to be carried away on a

city trip

in summer.

It's also tempting when you can get to your destination practically for free.

Many people are happy to accept the longer time they spend on the road.

But there's a small catch: As you've probably already noticed, the 9-euro Deutsche Bahn ticket is

not valid for all public transport

.

If you want to travel with

IC, EC or ICE

, you still have to buy tickets for the respective journeys.

Because the

9-euro ticket is only valid for regional transport

.

From June 1st you can theoretically travel all over Germany with the 9-euro ticket - but there is a small catch.

You can use the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus

without restrictions, but be careful with regional trains.

Because the 9-euro ticket is not valid on all regional trains.

As nice as the thought of leaving your car behind and using public transport almost free of charge is: watch out for regional trains.

Not all trains called "RE" are actually regional trains

, as Deutsche Bahn announced on Twitter.

It can happen that IC trains are used for local transport and run as RE, since Deutsche Bahn operates trains from

DB Regio

on the one hand and from

DB Fernverkehr

on the other .

DB long-distance trains such as intercity trains may not be used with the 9-euro ticket, even if they are traveling as regional trains.

How do I know if the 9 euro ticket is valid in my RE?

Information on whether your regional train can be used with the 9-euro ticket can be found in the DB Navigator app.

This is how you can find out whether the 9-euro ticket is valid on your regional train or not:

  • Open the

    DB Navigator app

and click on the three lines in the top right to go to the menu.

  • Select

    "Travel Information"

and enter the start and destination of your trip.

You can also set the date and time.

  • Click the "Search" button and wait for the app to find the relevant connections.

  • When you find the right connection, click on it.

A new display will open with Start at the top and Destination at the bottom.

Between them you will find the train designation

    , for example "RE17/IC2173"

    .

  • Click on the name of the train or the arrow to the right of it to open more detailed information about your connection.

  • In the DB Navigator app you can find out under "Information" whether your regional train can be used with the 9-euro ticket or not.

If the selected train is not approved for the 9-euro ticket, you will find the information "9-euro ticket not valid" as shown in the image.

In this case, unfortunately, the 9 euro ticket is not sufficient and you will have to

buy another train ticket to avoid a

penalty for traveling without a valid ticket .
