Jai Hindley was celebrated in Australia for the feat he completed yesterday in Verona, where he became the first exponent of the land of kangaroos able to win the cycling Giro d'Italia.
The 26-year-old from Perth, however, is not the first athlete from Oceania to triumph in a grand stage race.
Before him, as the local press recalls, the feat had been managed by Cadel Evans who, in 2011, at the age of 34, won the Tour de France.
"Like Hindley in Italy, however, no one ever", remembers the website 'The sporting news', which publishes on its homepage a beautiful photo of the pink Hindley jersey with the Endless Trophy in its hands.
The portal traces the day of the Hindley family, with their parents present in Verona and whom the runner had not seen for over a couple of years, ie since February 2020. "That time - Hindley confessed to the Australian press - I didn't know that he didn't I would have been back home for more than two years. "
"Jai Hindley made history - they write in Australia -, becoming the first Australian ever to win the Giro d'Italia, and only the second ever to win one of the great cycling tours, joining the great Cadel Evans who won the Tour de France in 2011 ".
"Hindley's victory in the Giro is a pivotal moment for Australian cycling, not just a part of it," reports Skynews Australia.
