Making rice may sound like a simple craft but it can be misleading to many, when a cup of uncooked rice that looks to us like an average dish per person - becomes a dish for two or more after cooking.

So what do you do with all the rice left over?

Put in the fridge and heat the next day of course.

However, it turns out that the method of storing and heating the rice may end up in upset stomach if not done properly.



According to the British Health Agency, the NHS, and the Food Standards Agency, rice can cause serious food poisoning - as bad as meat, even.

The Food Standards Agency explains: "It is not precisely the reheating that is a problem, but how the rice is stored before heating."

Rice contains spores of bacteria that can be harmful called Bacillus Cereus.

These are small cells that are able to multiply quickly and make you feel bad.

How bad?

According to the Israeli Ministry of Health, this bacterium can cause one of two diseases due to the production of a toxin.

The first, vomiting disease, is characterized by nausea and vomiting, general fatigue and sometimes even diarrhea.

The second, is a diarrheal disease, characterized by watery diarrhea and intestinal cramps, sometimes accompanied by nausea and vomiting.



If the rice remains at room temperature for a long time after cooking, these spores can become these harmful bacteria and produce toxins that cause vomiting and / or diarrhea.

These are usually expected to form between one and 5 hours after cooking.

"The best way to reheat cooked rice is through the microwave," explained Chi-Yu Smith, owner of food blog I Heart Umami.

According to her, all you have to do is put the rice in a suitable bowl for the microwave and cover it with cling film or a suitable lid so that the heat and moisture will work between the rice grains.

"Heat for about a minute, stir, then heat for another 30 seconds. You will get soft and airy rice in return."
