(ANSA) - ROME - For vestibular migraines, a problem of the nervous system that causes repeated dizziness in people suffering from migraines, help can come from a program of resistance exercises, such as jumping rope, running, plank.
This was revealed by a study conducted by experts from the Cheffe de service paramédical, Strasbourg, and published in the Revue Neurologique.
Vestibular migraine has vertigo as its main symptoms but the symptoms are not always associated with the classic migraine attack.
To investigate the effectiveness of resistance exercise on vestibular migraine (VM) symptoms among migraine patients, the researchers involved a total of 385 patients with vestibular migraine.
The patients were randomly divided into two groups, a control group taught relaxation techniques, an intervention group taught resistance exercises.
All participants received their interventions twice a week for 12 weeks.
Patients were monitored at two and four months, respectively, to evaluate the effects of treatment.
The primary objective of the clinical trial was to assess the number of vertiginous attacks in the previous week and the patients' scores on the Vertigo Severity Scale (VSS).
Secondary objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention on the symptoms of depression and anxiety, very common in this type of patients.
Blood concentrations of several pro-inflammatory molecules were also evaluated, including tumor necrosis factor-α and interferon-gamma.
Resistance exercise was more effective in relieving VM symptoms than relaxation techniques with monitoring performed two months after surgery.
Even more at four months, the extent of the
symptom relief was far better in the resistance exercise group than in the control group, in terms of scores on the two scales used (number of vertigo episodes and severity of dizziness), as well as anxiety and depression levels.
Blood levels of inflammatory molecules were also significantly lower in the resistance group than in the control group.
"Our study - the authors write - favors an exercise-oriented treatment scheme in the rehabilitation therapy of patients suffering from vestibular migraine and sheds light on the molecular mechanism that potentially involves the inflammatory pathways related to the two pro-inflammatory molecules," tumor necrosis factor-α and interferon-gamma.
