He was visiting Florence County, South Carolina, and was shot dead by a man who appeared to be shooting indiscriminately at passing cars near his home in the woods.

Eight-year-old Quarius Naqua Dunham was hit in the neck and died the next day on Sunday, the coroner said.

The boy's father, who was also shot in the leg, survived the attack.

Charles Montgomery Allen was arrested at the scene and charged with murder, attempted murder and four counts of firing a gun into an occupied vehicle, Sheriff TJ Joye said.

The 40-year-old was apparently under the influence of drugs.

It is unclear why he opened fire on the cars on Saturday.

"It was just a senseless, senseless act," Joye told WBTW-TV.

A second motorist said a bullet hit the roof of his car.

"I noticed the man was aiming and I said he was going to shoot again, so I ducked and hit the gas pedal to get past him and he fired again," Calvin Cade said.

Quarius Naqua Dunham was a third grade student at Little Harbor School in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

"An event like this touches our community as a whole," wrote Portsmouth Schools Principal Steve Zadravec in a message to the community. "Our hearts are with the family as we support one another through this incredible tragedy."
