Food becomes even more expensive with inflation.

The federal government recommends that you stock up on basic foodstuffs in times of crisis.

Munich – With the corona pandemic, delivery bottlenecks and, last but not least, poor crop yields, inflation in Germany recently reached over five percent.

The economic crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the resulting increase in energy and raw material prices are leading to a current record high inflation rate of over 7.3 percent – and the trend is rising.

Experts predict bleak prospects: costs and prices will continue to rise, which will be at the expense of consumers in Germany.

Against the background of inflation and the Ukraine war, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (51, SPD) advises citizens to stock up on emergency food to take home.

Create emergency stocks because of inflation?

"The worst is yet to come for households," warns an expert

Going to the supermarket is currently difficult for a number of Germans, groceries such as butter, flour and pasta have become significantly more expensive, so that they see their basic needs at risk.

The producer prices of these foods have recently risen much faster than the retail prices.

"In Germany, food retail prices are likely to rise by more than 10 percent in 2022," quotes "Die Welt" as trading expert Aurélien Duthoit from the credit insurer Allianz Trade.

An end to the price increases in retail is also not in sight.

He calculates that an average of at least 250 euros in additional costs per year will be incurred for each individual.

"The worst is yet to come for the households [...]", adds Duthoit.

Inflation in Germany: Which foods are currently affected by price increases?

At the beginning of 2021, manufacturers of food and beverages increased their prices in Germany by an average of 16.6 percent, above all everyday products such as oil and butter/fats with 53 percent, flour with 28 percent and pasta with a 19 percent price increase.

Price increases for milk and milk products are still to be expected in the coming weeks.

“High inflation and post-pandemic declines in in-store food sales are putting pressure on grocery retail profitability,” Duthoit said, according to Die Welt.

Crisis and inflation in Germany: preparing emergency care at home

Does an emergency supply of food at home make sense?

Absolutely, because the war situation in Europe could, in the worst case, lead to a longer power outage or a bottleneck in the drinking water supply, say experts.

And what about increasing inflation in Germany?

Rising prices could make it financially difficult for many Germans to buy basic groceries privately in the future.

It could therefore make sense to stock up on certain foods and drinks at home, but not to "hoard".

According to the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), people tend to act impulsively when they “hamster”.

Setting up an emergency supply is primarily about purchasing food, drinks, medicines and other essentials in a well thought-out manner in order to be able to bridge around 15 to 30 days without problems.

A rule of thumb could be: two liters of liquid and 2,200 kilocalories of food, per adult, per day.

The BKK's guide to emergency preparedness and correct action in emergency situations lists, among other things, which and how much food makes sense as a stock:

  • 20 liters of water

  • 2.6 kilograms of milk and milk products (UHT milk, cheese)

  • 3.5 kilograms of grain products (perishable brown bread, crispbread, pasta), rice, potatoes

  • 4 kilograms of legumes and vegetables (canned goods and jars)

  • 1.5 kilograms of fish, meat and eggs or whole egg powder (whole egg powder can be kept for several years)

  • 0.4 kilograms of oils and fats

  • 2.5 kilograms of fruit (canned)

Setting up an emergency supply is less about "hoarding" - more about buying food, drinks, medicines and other essentials in a well thought-out manner.

"It definitely makes sense to have an emergency supply at home": Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (51, SPD) addressed the consequences of the Russia-Ukraine conflict with this recommendation to the German population.

Whether it is because of the Ukraine war and possible catastrophe scenarios for Germany, an acute illness such as Corona or even because of the consequences of skyrocketing inflation - according to federal and state authorities, an emergency supply of food at home is always advisable.

Food supply in an emergency: Drinking is more important than eating

A person can survive for up to three weeks without eating or nourishing themselves - without drinking and liquids they can only survive about three days.

Deficient fluid intake leads to cardiac arrest due to kidney failure, as is also the case with chronic renal failure.

In the case of private emergency care, it is therefore advisable to ensure that you have enough liquid – primarily water, for small children also milk with calcium for bone growth.
