In
a festival like Orange, there is a need for this notion of pleasure
,” says Jean-Louis Grinda, director of the Chorégies.
The man, who is also at the head of the Monte-Carlo Opera, descends from a dynasty of operetta singers.
It is to say if, for him, the pleasure of the spectator is a familiar science.
“
The 2021 edition was very encouraging;
people were happy to be at the show, but we also lost 30% of our audience because of the health pass.
This new edition conveys a pure spirit of return to the party that is a festival.
A sharing, both on the side of the artists and the public, all happy to be present.
Despite the war, despite the elections, the public was quick to book.
As if the harshness of the world, on the contrary, made the great walkabout vital, in the Roman Theater, in the open air under the stars.

For this new edition, Jean-Louis Grinda varies the proposals.
Two operas given one evening each.
The charming
Elisir d'amore,
by Donizetti, with the highly anticipated Pretty Yende in Adina and René Barbera in Nemorino, and the Orchester philharmonique de Radio France, conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti.
And the burning
Gioconda
by Ponchielli directed by Jean-Louis Grinda: “
This opera with its arias, duets, trios, large chorus had not been performed at Orange for eighty-three years.
While with the way it exalts the lyrical genre, it seems studied for the place.
For the staging, I worked on the idea of the seaside with ropes on a bare stage;
and I gathered for the distribution of important voices: Saioa Hernandez, great dramatic voice for this role, Clémentine Margaine and the Italian baritone Claudio Sgura
(who replaces Amartüvshin Enkhbatini initially planned for the poster
,
Ed)
”
Jean-Louis Grinda has also planned an Italian night, performed by the choirs and orchestra of La Scala, two major symphonic concerts, dance, with
Giselle
danced by the Ballet of the Opéra national du Capitole, Toulouse, and
Les Lumières of the city
in a cine-concert, given with the music of Chaplin, interpreted by the National Orchestra of Avignon-Provence and their musical director Débora Waldman at the baton.
Finally, because the Chorégies encourage choirs to be honoured, John Nelson will conduct Beethoven's
Missa Solemnis
with Patricia Petibon and Marie-Nicole Lemieux.
