"Imitation of what they did to the Jews in the Holocaust": The tattoo trend of "Strange Things" angers viewers | Israel today

The official Instagram page of the Netflix hit series shared fan tattoo photos with the number 011 on their wrists, as a tribute to the character of Elban.

A new and worrying trend has been gaining momentum since the fourth season of the successful Netflix series "Strange Things" aired, and web surfers are both angry and worried.

As part of the same trend, fans of the series are tattooing the number 011 on their wrists, similar to a tattoo of the character of Elban, played by actress Millie Bobby Brown.

In "Strange Things" the number engraved on the wrists of the lab children neutralizes them from a de facto halakhic identity, so that they are nameless and they remain only as a number.

The alarming phenomenon began to gain momentum on social media, when fans of the series uploaded photos documenting the tattoos - while the official page of the series on Instagram made sure to share and even be proud of the problematic photos.

The shares provoked considerable anger among quite a few surfers, who demanded explanations for support and even demanded the removal of the photos or at least the condemnation of the trend.

The anger of many stemmed from the connotation that the number engraved in the skin evokes when it comes to the Holocaust, when for them it is an insensitive act and their place, certainly when it is backed up and exposed on the official pages of the series.

"This cruise of tattoos from 'Strange Things' is very inappropriate and tastes very bad" he tweeted in the complaint.

"This is an imitation of what they did to the Jews during the Holocaust," it read.

"It is our failure as a nation that such a thing becomes a trend without people even understanding the dark historical connotation behind it," they added in another tweet.

"Why should people with such painful memories of the past continue to be challenged?", Another surfer wondered.

that tattoo shit from Stranger Things is… wildly inappropriate and in very poor taste in my opinion, it mimics the labels they branded Jewish people and others during the holocaust pic.twitter.com/DLFpsYmSwI

Along with the dozens of outraged reactions, one could also find viewers who argued that there is no room at all for comparing the Holocaust to tattoos in the series and that the very discussion is what provokes antagonism and creates an unjustified storm.

"Stop searching and digging hard," they wrote.

"There is no connection between the horrors of the Holocaust and what is in the series or what the fans are tattooing. It is enough to just stir."
