In the summer of 2019, ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel was trembling several times.

In the most recent interview, she explains the background.

Berlin – Almost exactly half a year to the day after her term in office, former Chancellor Angela Merkel (67, CDU) is back in public.

On Tuesday evening (June 7) she answered questions from the "Spiegel" journalist Alexander Osang in a TV interview in the Berliner Ensemble.

The topic of conversation was, of course, the current political events surrounding the Ukraine war and Russia.

In addition, the ex-Chancellor also revealed personal things: For example, how she spends her free time in retirement and what was the reason for her multiple seizures.

In the summer of 2019, Merkel caused uncertainty with what appeared to be health problems.

Many viewers were concerned when she was suddenly caught shaking violently in front of the cameras during a meeting with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

These tremors increased and were repeated at other public appearances during this time.

At that time, the chancellor said that she was fine.

However, when Osang asked her about it during the TV interview on Tuesday evening, she revealed what was actually behind it.

After the death of her mother Herlind Kasner in April 2019, she was very exhausted.

"That took more of a toll on me than I thought," said Merkel.

It is also said to have had something to do with the fact that she drank too little.

"And in the end it was also a kind of fear when a situation like this arose," she revealed.

But knowing that there was a chair behind her gave her more security again.

"It was obviously a burden that is in you," explains the ex-Chancellor.

Merkel in retirement: "Today I'm doing very well personally"

At the beginning of the conversation in the Berliner Ensemble, the journalist asked the former Chancellor how she was feeling at the moment.

"Today I'm doing very well personally," replied the 67-year-old.

After her tenure, she resolved to move more.

She also wanted to read things she hadn't gotten around to before.

So she spent five weeks alone on the Baltic Sea to "air out", as she called it.

Although she used to have "appointments, appointments, appointments", she didn't get bored during this break.

She read books and listened to audio books.

She is coping well with her new phase of life and can be happy.

Nevertheless, she remains a political person, which is why she, like many others, is depressed these days in view of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

During the interview, Merkel reported a brazen attempt by Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin to intimidate her.

Since the beginning of the war, speculation about his health has increased.

Observers suspect that Putin is seriously ill and suffering from Parkinson's or cancer.
