More than twenty years after her death, Lady Diana Spencer continues to exert charm, evoke mystery and represent the quintessence of the beautiful fairy tale that ended badly. (HANDLE)

For twenty years Lady Diana has been the most photographed, chased and filmed person on the planet: so why make her a new documentary film?

Ed Perkins, the director of

The Princess

which opens the 18th Biografilm Festival in Bologna on June 10th, approached the character of the famous Princess of Wales, narrating it "from the viewer's point of view",

working only on archival material

.

"What interested me - explains Perkins, for the occasion in Bologna - was to give an image of Diana's personality, paradoxically less mediated, despite being one of the most mediatic people ever, in such a way as to leave the public who sees a his answer, his memory, his personal space for this story ".

When Diana Spencer died in the tragic Paris car accident with Dodi Al-Fayed on August 31, 1997, Perkins was 11 years old.

"I remember my parents who entered my room crying, telling me what had happened - she says - Neither I nor they had known her, we later witnessed this scene of national mourning with people pouring into the streets as if it had happened a tragedy that concerned a family member, a person extremely close to them. I confess - continues the director - that at that age I was not in pain, but I remember feeling confused because I didn't understand why all this was happening. he was interested in understanding it was the incredible side of this person that had fascinated so many people all over the world over time.

For my film I could interview people who told the camera how they had known her and why she was special to them or the effect it had on them.

But that would have had a dose of speculation that I didn't care about. "

The royal family is not involved in any way in the production, but they have been made aware of the film: "When I tell a story I am aware of the responsibility that I have - adds Ed Perkins - And since this story involves the sensitivity of millions of people but in particular is also the story of William and Harry, who lost their mother, I would say that this is above all the story of a mother. I really want to respect this sensitivity and I hope I have been balanced in keeping things impartial ".

The whole film was built through real documents with the voices of the people, even off screen, to act as a common thread together with the original music by Martin Phipps.

The film will be broadcast on Sky Documentaries and streamed on NOW to coincide with the anniversary of Lady D.
