Visit to the abandoned island of Povgalia (steveronin)

The island of Povgalia is really close to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Venice, but you will not be able to visit it.

Some supernatural scientists say it is "the most haunted place in the world" and was used as a hospital for the elderly until the 1930s, until one of the principals jumped to his death from a tall tower, after saying spirits had driven him insane.

Today, very few people get permission to visit Puglia, where an estimated 160,000 people have died from the "black death" epidemic.

Fearless researchers Matt Nadine and Andy Thompson went in there to film a video of the Forbidden Island.

The video shows the abandoned buildings, countless tombs and the many containers that were used to burn the bodies.

Reminders can be seen everywhere on the haunted side of the island, with on one of the walls written in Latin with the date of 1793: "Do not dig, those who suffered rest here."

40-year-old Matt from Sheffield uploaded the clip to his YouTube page, "Finders Beepers History Seekers" where he mostly explores abandoned and historic places along with Andy.

"It was very, very creepy. We could already understand it from the fact that the taxi driver was afraid to get there, not just because of the police, but because of the place itself, he ran away as fast as he could."

Publicia's high death toll is from the 100 years beginning in 1776, when people suspected of being infected with the Black Death were sent to solitary confinement there before being allowed to enter Venice.

Ships that were suspected had to anchor for 40 days there before arriving in Venice.

In practice, anyone who was in quarantine or isolation in Puglia received a death sentence, as the plague was endemic there.

In 1922 the island buildings were converted into a hospital for people with mental illness.

According to rumors, the doctors there performed cruel experiments on the inpatients, including amputation, before the manager of the place, who he said was haunted by ghosts, jumped from the hospital tower.

Manual drills and some of the tools that doctors used for their primitive surgeries are still scattered in the ruined buildings and there are people who claim that the bell of the tower can still be heard, even though it was removed many years ago.

The island was later used as a nursing home for the elderly, until it was finally closed in 1968.

For the past 54 years the public has been closed to all visitors, and the buildings are slowly being demolished naturally.

In 2015 there was slight hope that the island would become a luxury resort.

The Italian government had hoped that investors would come to demolish the collapsing hospital and turn it into a luxury hotel and there were reports that Luigi Brugnero, a businessman who owned the local basketball team, was interested in it.

Eventually the deal fell through, and even though the place is just minutes from San Marco Square which is crowded with tourists, the island continues to be deserted.
