It is a fraud that has been wreaking havoc since last summer and that does not only affect vulnerable people.

A scammer recovers your data, for example in the form of a phishing email sent beforehand inviting you to update personal information, including your credit card number.

Another method, even more unstoppable, the ill-intentioned person obtains your data on the Darknet, the hidden face of the Internet.

The scammers can also simply contact you by a simple phone call, pretending to be your bank, after having inquired about your profile.

This is what happened to Tanguy.

This Tuesday, May 3, Tanguy is on the way to a business trip to Nantes.

He is on the train when he receives a call from a number beginning with 06. At the end of the line, an individual introduces himself as an anti-fraud advisor from his bank.

This one alerts him: transactions of an amount greater than 1000 euros were made the day before from his personal account, and asks him if he is the author.

“No, it's not me,” Tanguy replies.

The bogus bank adviser then offers to cancel these transactions.

“He was reassuring, he knew a lot of information about me, including the last four digits of my bank card.

But he also put me in a position of insecurity, because he told me that I had to act quickly,” confides Tanguy.

“This is called social engineering,” explains Jean-Jacques Latour, director of cybersecurity expertise at cybermalveillance.gouv.fr.

“The fraudsters will play on psychological levers.

They will be very comfortable on the phone, will have you confirm your address, your account numbers… They are good hucksters,” says the cybersecurity expert.

The trap is therefore closing on Tanguy and his wife Marianne, who will be contacted later.

Result of the races, in less than two hours the scammer will carry out nearly 15,000 euros in transactions from their accounts.
