A well-known mountaineer,
Claudio Ghezzi
, 69, from Missaglia (Lecco), lost his life when he fell from a via ferrata onto the Northern Grigna (2410 meters), one of the best-known peaks in the province of Lecco.
Ghezzi, known above all as a record holder of ascents to the summit of the mountain, having completed more than 5,600 in almost half a century, today had already arrived on the top of the Grigna at the Brioschi refuge when, according to an initial reconstruction,
he would have returned to the Carbonari via ferrata for help a friend in difficulty
, but losing balance in an exposed point and falling for tens of meters.
The via ferrata was then evacuated.
All rescue attempts are in vain.
Ghezzi in the past had also been the protagonist of several expeditions to South America and Asia, between Nepal and Tibet.
