Almost every hobby gardener wants the perfect lawn.
Masses of ants are often a thorn in your side - so you fight the insects naturally with home remedies.
A densely overgrown lawn with rich green colors - who doesn't want that?
Individual anthills that pile up in the middle of the green often destroy the perfect view.
We show you how to fight the insects.
First of all, consider - are the ants really a nuisance?
Everyone has to decide for themselves whether the ants are really so annoying that they have to disappear from the lawn completely.
The following points could help you in your decision:
advantages | Disadvantages |
---|---|
Ants keep the garden clean by eating carrion, for example. | Ants are often to blame for aphid infestations. |
Ants eat other creepy crawlies. | They build their nests in disturbing places. |
They fertilize the soil when building their nest. | Ants infest your food when you picnic outdoors. |
Also note that the
red wood ant
is a protected species and must not be killed.
So always clarify what type it is before taking any action.
If you have made your decision and want to get rid of the insects, we now have a few tips for you:
Fighting ants in the lawn: Relocate the insects
Before resorting to any chemical or drastic measures,
try
gentler methods .
If only the location of the nest is a thorn in your side and not the ants themselves, this can also be relocated quickly.
To do this, fill a
clay bucket with wood shavings and place it upside down
on the ant nest.
After a few days, the ants will then slowly get caught in the wood shavings or go into the bucket - if the queen is there, the move out is all the safer.
As soon as you think the nest has been emptied, close the opening from below by pushing a spade through and turning the pot upside down.
Then place it where you want the ants to resettle.
In the lawn: fight ants with smells
Some smells don't appeal to the crawlers at all
- and they'll be gone in no time.
This includes:
lavender
marjoram
essential oils
cheap perfume
eucalyptus
anise
sage
lemon balm
Simply spray the nest with one of these scents or spread a few sprigs or flowers of the respective plants around it.
The crawling animals are already looking for a new home without having to resort to chemical agents.

Fight Ants: Set a beer trap in the lawn
If you choose to sacrifice a few drops of the cool drink for ant control, it will be well rewarded.
To do this, fill a
flat plate with some stale beer
and stir in
a tablespoon of honey
.
The ants are attracted by the sweet smell while drowning in the beer.
Baking powder home remedy: How to use it to fight ants in the lawn
You've probably heard of this trick: mix some
baking powder
with sugar
and spread it near the ant's nest.
Attracted by the sugar, the crawlers taste the mixture - but the baking powder kills them.
However, for the method to work, it must be a baking powder that contains baking soda.
In addition, the ants die quite painfully in this way.
Therefore, you can alternatively use the following method:
Repel ants with lawn mowing
Consistent lawn care quickly spoils the fun at home for the ant colony.
To do this, you have to regularly
shorten the lush greenery and level the anthills every seven to ten days between April and September
.
Frequent lawn sprinkling also annoys the crawlers.
If you are patient, you will find that the ant colony slowly makes its way away.
