A 36-year-old is said to have killed his father – on the subsequent flight from the police he collided with a group of cyclists. A 71-year-old died and three other people were seriously injured.

In Mannheim, a man is said to have killed his father and to have driven his car into a group of cyclists while fleeing.

A 71-year-old cyclist was fatally injured.

Three other people were seriously injured and taken to hospitals, police and prosecutors reported.

The 36-year-old suspect is accused of killing his 69-year-old father in Ellerstadt in Rhineland-Palatinate shortly after 6 p.m.

The alleged perpetrator then fled in a car before the police arrived.

On his escape, the suspect jumped into the Rhine

In Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, he collided with four cyclists.

After the serious accident, the man fled again – this time on foot.

He then jumped into the adjacent Rhine.

"The man, who was probably in a mental state of emergency, was eventually arrested by the police," the investigators reported.

A helicopter and the water police were deployed.

It will now be further investigated.

The scene of the accident on Mannheim's Rhenaniastrasse was cordoned off over a large area on Sunday evening.
