In Mannheim, a man is said to have killed his father and to have driven his car into a group of cyclists while fleeing.
A 71-year-old cyclist was fatally injured.
Three other people were seriously injured and taken to hospitals, police and prosecutors reported.
The 36-year-old suspect is accused of killing his 69-year-old father in Ellerstadt in Rhineland-Palatinate shortly after 6 p.m.
The alleged perpetrator then fled in a car before the police arrived.
On his escape, the suspect jumped into the Rhine
In Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, he collided with four cyclists.
After the serious accident, the man fled again – this time on foot.
He then jumped into the adjacent Rhine.
"The man, who was probably in a mental state of emergency, was eventually arrested by the police," the investigators reported.
A helicopter and the water police were deployed.
It will now be further investigated.
The scene of the accident on Mannheim's Rhenaniastrasse was cordoned off over a large area on Sunday evening.
