The virus that causes the syndrome is varicella zoster VZV, the same virus that causes chickenpox and sometimes stays dormant in the nerve roots in the body.

In some cases, even years after the disease, it breaks out in the form of herpes zoster, also known as shingles.

Because the virus is located in the nerve roots, its outbreaks occur in typical areas and usually in the form of a half-belt in the lower back, chest or face area.

When the eruption is in the facial nerve area, as in Bieber's case it is called Ramsey Hunt Syndrome.
