In Peru, police have seized about 2.2 tons of cocaine hidden in asparagus boxes.

As the police announced on Saturday, the drugs should be shipped from the port of Callao near the Peruvian capital Lima to Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Seven Peruvians were arrested and arrest warrants were issued against two Albanians.

As the head of the Peruvian drug investigators, César Echevarría, said, the two Albanians were the masterminds of the drug smuggling bust.

It is about "a network with connections to Colombia, Ecuador and Albania".

Since the beginning of the year, the Peruvian police have seized around 35 tons of drugs.

With around 400 tons per year, Peru is one of the largest cocaine producers in the world.
