(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, JUN 13 - In the first five months of 2022, illegal entries into the EU increased by 82% compared to the same period in 2021, reaching 86420. The higher number of arrivals (40675, triple compared to January-May2021 ) was recorded on the Balkan route: The data were released today by Frontex, the EU external border control agency.
In the central Mediterranean, i.e. the struggle that brings migrants to Italy, the increase in the flow was 15% for a total of 16828 registered cases.
A surge in arrivals (+ 447%) was also recorded for illegal entries on the EU borders that look to Ests, although the total number of irregular migrants was just 2155. On the other hand, arrivals on the eastern Mediterranean route, where there is a sharp decline. it was a decline of 17% compared to 2021. When the nationalities most present among migrants, Frontex reports, among other things, that on the Balkan struggle it was mainly Afghans, Syrians and Turks who crossed the borders of the Union.
