Depression is a disease that may not be visible to the outside world, but affects hundreds of millions of people around the world.

A new study has found that adhering to a Mediterranean diet can help young men overcome depression.

Researchers at the University of Sydney say doctors should send young people dealing with depressive symptoms to a nutritionist as part of their treatment plan.

The clinical trial is the first to evaluate the impact of a Mediterranean diet - consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil and grains - on the mental health of young men.

In the small study that included 72 men aged 18 to 25, one group switched to a Mediterranean diet for 12 weeks while another group participated in a treatment called befriending therapy.

The researchers assessed the mental health of the participants at the beginning of the experiment and again after six and 12 weeks.

Men on the Mediterranean diet had a “significantly higher” quality of life score than the group that participated in the sessions.

Their score, was measured according to the Beck questionnaire for assessing depression which is a common measure of depressive symptoms, and it also improved faster.

The researchers say the diet may help people with poor mental health by helping their gut release serotonin.

The chemical is formed by bacteria in the gut, but they need to consume fiber to work well.

Fortunately, fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of fiber.

"These findings underscore the important role of nutrition in treating depression," write researchers in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Jessica Bays of the University of Technology Sydney.

"There are many reasons why we scientifically think that food affects mood. For example, about 90 percent of serotonin, a chemical that helps us feel happy, is created in our gut by gut bacteria. There is evidence that these bacteria can communicate to the brain through the vagus nerve, in what. Called the intestinal-brain axis, "Bice adds," in order for us to have beneficial bacteria, we need to feed them on fiber, which is found in legumes, fruits and vegetables. "

"We were surprised that some of the young men were willing to take on a new diet," Bays said, "those who were in the group of the Mediterranean diet change were able to significantly change their original diet, under nutritional guidance, over a short time frame."

"The findings show that physicians and psychologists should consider referring depressed young men to a dietitian as an important component in treating clinical depression. Nearly all of our participants remained with the program, and many were eager to continue dieting after the study ended, showing how effective, tolerable and worthwhile the intervention was." , The researchers conclude.
