Back to the Past: The original boxed first edition of a VHS version of the first part of Back to the Future sold for $75,000 at an auction in the USA.
The videocassette was previously owned by actor Tom Wilson, who played villain Biff Tannen in the three films.
The consumer electronics relic was accompanied by a note from Wilson: "This is a VHS tape of the first edition of Back to the Future that was sent to me by the studio at the time.
Because I knew this technique would stay forever, I kept it.
But now I can't find a VCR anymore.
Oh well.
Have fun with it!".
Expensive collectibles
According to the organizers, 260 video cassettes were up for auction, all in their original packaging, most of them first editions of films from the 1970s and 1980s.
At least in the USA, video cassettes have become real rarities for collectors.
Even if they have no other value than nostalgic - in contrast to long-playing records, which connoisseurs still consider unsurpassed for their sound quality.
A boxed VHS of Star Wars sold for over $57,000 last December.
