The public prosecutor's office in Stade is investigating Fynn Kliemann.
It is about suspected fraud in the context of mask shops, as a spokesman for the authority told SPIEGEL on request.
The “Wirtschaftswoche” had previously reported.
Kliemann and the textile company Global Tactics were heavily criticized in early May by a TV report by the satirist Jan Böhmermann on ZDF.
The research suggests that the country of production was deliberately kept secret in transactions by the textile company and with the participation of Kliemann in 2020 - because the masks came from Asia instead of Europe.
He did not say what the investigation was about, a spokesman for the public prosecutor.
He merely announced that at least one complaint had been received against Kliemann.
Kliemann himself has not commented so far, so far he has left a request from the dpa news agency unanswered.
After the revelations, Fynn Kliemann repeatedly gave details and explanations about the case, including in an interview with SPIEGEL.
There was talk of misunderstandings and mistakes.
The case is very small.
However, Kliemann denies that he was involved in concealing the origin of the masks.
He only made contacts and, above all, with his reputation, his name and free of charge, worked to ensure that masks were quickly organized in Germany at wholesale level during the pandemic.
However, it is undisputed that Kliemann knew about and was involved in many important decisions relating to the dubious mask deals that happened under his name, as research by SPIEGEL revealed.
Kliemann apologized to his fans on Instagram and announced that he would clean himself up.
Kliemann reaches hundreds of thousands of people on Instagram and YouTube.
He became known with Handyman video.
He makes music, paints, sells fashion - and runs »Kliemannsland«, a project for creative people in Rüspel near Bremen.
He is also a businessman and operates holiday accommodation, among other things.
