Sunflower oil is sold out?

Then an alternative ends up in the shopping cart when you go shopping for the week.

An environmentally friendly product could step in for around 75 cents per 250 grams.

Munich – The customers are appalled by the prices.

In the supermarket she stands in front of empty shelves and has to experience rationing like toilet paper.

We're talking about sunflower oil.

Since cooking oil has become rare in German supermarkets and discounters as a result of the Ukraine war, customers have been outraged and have been sharing their experiences online.

This cheap alternative to sunflower oil is available in every supermarket

It's a good thing that we have enough alternatives in this country to be able to continue cooking, sizzling and deep-frying.

A good substitute is rapeseed oil, for example.

But you don't always need oil to cook in the kitchen.

Aldi, Rewe and other retailers have cooking oil substitutes from 75 cents in their refrigerated shelves, namely margarine.

Margarine is available semi-fat, fat, with yoghurt cultures or vegan.

"Margarine is an emulsion of vegetable and/or animal fats and water or skimmed milk and has a fat content of between 39 and 90 percent," says Wikipedia.

"For flavoring, acidifiers such as lactic acid, citric acid, sour whey or yoghurt cultures are added."

Jack of all trades - Inexpensive product from Aldi & Co replaces sunflower oil in the kitchen

Margarine consumption has been declining in recent years.

Coconut fat, coconut oil, clarified butter and many other cooking fats have come onto the market in the last 20 years.

The industrially produced margarine can be used in many ways.

"Margarine is considered a jack of all trades for the kitchen," according to Stiftung Warentest.

Both full-fat margarine (at least 80 percent fat) and low-fat spreads (70-75 percent) are suitable for frying.

Conventional margarine is already available from 0.75 euros per 250 grams in supermarkets or discounters.

On average, customers pay 1.60 euros for an organic margarine.

And for a vegan organic margarine without palm oil as an additive, 2.69 euros for 250 grams.

Climate-friendly and cheap

Apart from the price, margarine is not only a profitable alternative for sunflower oil.

It is also a topic as a butter substitute.

As a vegetable product, the production of margarine causes significantly less climate-damaging CO2 than butter, writes the manufacturer

Alsan

.

The production of one kilogram of butter generates 23.80 kilograms of CO2, while margarine only produces 1.35 kilograms.
