Ghislaine Maxwell, who helped her ex-partner Jeffrey Epstein abuse minors for years, is calling for a lenient sentence for herself. Her lawyers argued on Wednesday that Maxwell should receive a sentence "well below" the 20 years imprisonment required by authorities.

This is reported, among other things, by the British Guardian.

At the end of December, Maxwell was convicted of, among other things, human trafficking of minors for the purpose of abuse – Maxwell had supplied at least four victims to Epstein and had sometimes been present when he abused them.

The sentence is to be announced on June 28th.

Depending on how the court assesses the seriousness of her crimes, she faces up to 55 years in prison.

In a report by their lawyers, they now describe Maxwell's prison conditions.

One of Maxwell's inmates is said to have told other prisoners that he wanted to strangle Maxwell in his sleep.

She was offered money for this.

The prisoner is said to have said that the additional sentence of Maxwell's murder was worth it to her.

Additionally, Maxwell's attorneys said her late father, publisher Robert Maxwell, was abusive to her and his other children.

Maxwell once wanted to hang a poster on a nail in her room.

When her father saw this, he got angry and hit Maxwell's hand with a hammer.

Her "traumatic childhood" made her receptive to Jeffrey Epstein.

She made herself dependent on Epstein and submitted to his judgement.

Maxwell, her attorneys say, will be convicted as a proxy for Epstein's crimes.

Epstein was found dead in his prison cell in 2019, and authorities believe he committed suicide.

During the trial, Maxwell's attorneys had portrayed her as another victim of Epstein.

Maxwell continues to claim that she is innocent.

Maxwell came to New York City in the early 1990s.

There she met Epstein at one of the numerous celebrity parties and was his girlfriend at times.

Those close to Epstein described her role in his life as a mix of employee and best friend.

According to prosecutors, she was generously rewarded for this: between 1999 and 2007 Epstein allegedly transferred around 30 million dollars to her.
