They may have been hoping for something valuable, but two children walking through a Hamburg park with a metal detector found something explosive instead: a hand grenade from World War II.
The police announced this when asked by SPIEGEL.
The Hamburger Abendblatt had first reported on it.
The children were said to be out and about with a metal detector in the "Am Weiher" park in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel early Wednesday evening.
When it went off, the kids dug and found a World War II fragmentation grenade.
The police informed the explosive ordnance clearance service of the fire brigade.
This found on site that the grenade was not transportable.
The grenade was then detonated at the site where it was found – since there were no buildings within a radius of 50 meters, evacuation was not necessary.
