Green lettuce tastes wonderfully fresh in summer - just stupid if it quickly becomes limp and brown.

With these tips you can make lettuce last longer.

Do you love a crispy salad as a side dish or main course in summer?

Unfortunately, the green

leaves of lettuce, iceberg lettuce, etc.

become limp quite quickly after purchase and are therefore no longer appetizing.

This leads to more food being thrown away, which shouldn't be the case.

You just need to know a few

tips for proper storage

!

Store correctly at home: this way, lettuce stays crisp for longer

  • If you don't want to process and eat the lettuce right away: don't wash it yet!

If you only remove wilted leaves, it will last longer.

  • Just like vegetables, lettuce belongs in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.

But watch out for the other vegetables and fruits in the area: some produce the ripening gas ethylene, which causes discoloration and wilted leaves in lettuce.

Examples of ethylene-producing fruits and vegetables include apples, bananas, mangoes, avocados, and tomatoes.

  • If you buy lettuce in a plastic bag: Out with it!

These plastic bags trap the moisture in them, so microorganisms can easily form in them, which can spoil the salad.

Use these tips to make lettuce last longer

As is well known, there are many types of

lettuce

on the market, so it is not possible to say for all how long they will keep.

But there is a rule of thumb: the harder the leaves, the longer they stay crisp.

You can squeeze out a few

more days of durability

by following these tips :

  • Drizzle a damp cloth with vinegar or lemon juice and wrap crisp lettuce leaves in it.

This is how you protect lettuce from drying out.

  • A closable box is also suitable for storing (dry) salad in it.

But please do not close the lid completely so that the salad gets enough air.

  • Also try this

    storage tip

: Cut your lettuce into pieces, wash and spin dry.

Place the lettuce leaves in a large, sealable jar and top with a clean paper towel or tea towel, which you change regularly: it will soak up the moisture.

Store the salad jar in the fridge.

This should keep your salad crisp and fresh for some time.

If you notice an unpleasant odor or slimy consistency, the salad is spoiled, throw it away!

If you happen to have wilted a few

lettuce leaves

despite following these tips , you can often use a clever trick to freshen them up!

By the way, freezing is not an option to make lettuce last longer.

When thawed, it would become mushy and unappetizing.
