"Having been the first in Italy it took me 20 months and I hope that the next people who retrace my path will take much less time because

20 months, for those who are ill and suffering, are really really long

".

This is what Federico Carboni

said in a video, recorded a few days before his death,

until now known by the invented name of 'Mario', the 44-year-old quadriplegic from Senigallia (Ancona), who yesterday put an end to his suffering with the medically assisted suicide in the home.

In the video, delivered to Filomena Gallo, of the Coscioni Association, Mario tells of his battle that lasted 20 months.

Federico Carboni is

the first person to have obtained access to assisted suicide in Italy

, based on the provisions of the sentence of the Constitutional Court 242 \ 2019 on the "Cappato / Antoniani 'djFabo' case.

THE TEXT OF THE VIDEO MESSAGE

"Hello everyone. I was Mario, - says the man - I am Federico and when you see this video I will no longer be there because finally after a battle that I have been fighting for two years I will be able to put an end to my suffering.

I was in a car accident in October 2010

, bumping into a shed and was left quadriplegic.

- he remembers - Since that moment my life has changed completely.

I no longer feel anything about my body from the shoulders down, but I did everything to make my life as good as possible, but in recent years I have had a continuous increase in pain and endurance that I no longer tolerate on my body ".

"In January 2020 I felt with Dignitas and I began to do all the documentation to go to Switzerland. Towards May-June - says 'Mario-Federico' - I also got the green light.

Shortly before leaving for Switzerland, I sent an email to Marco

[Cappato, ed] and I thanked him for all the battles they were having and that I would be yet another Italian forced to exile abroad to put an end to my suffering.

He replied: Federico, do what but you want to have the possibility to try to do it in your country

.

And so after a few days I contacted the secretary of the Luca Coscioni Association, the lawyer Filomena Gallo, and we began the bureaucratic part to try to obtain assisted suicide in Italy "." Having been the first in Italy, it took me 20 months - he concludes - and I hope that the next people who retrace my path will take much less time because 20 months for those who are ill and suffering are really really long ".
