At least two were killed in the shooting outside a church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, while a third person was injured.
The suspect was caught.
"Three people in the episcopal church of Santo Stefano were shot at," police from Vestavia Hills said on their Facebook page.
The shooting took place in front of the church shortly after 6:00 pm local time, during a "potluck", a community meal in which everyone brings a plate.
Police said the assailant entered the church on his own and started shooting, hitting three people in all.
The attacker was caught by the agents.
