There he meets the boss himself: Gorilla Franklin.

Excited zoo visitors film the dangerous situation and share videos on various social networks.

The clips show different recordings.

One of them: The dog stands a little to the side and seems to be looking for a way out in a panic.

He keeps looking left and right and panting heavily.

Then Franklin jumps forward and rushes the four-legged friend through the facility.

The scenes in which a dog is trapped in a burning car are also dramatic.

Gorilla chases dog: keepers intervene immediately

In the meantime, the zoo keepers are alarmed and immediately initiate a kind of emergency plan.

All gorillas have undergone special "recall" training.

It's a regular part of park safety, the zoo's staff said in an email to NBC 7 San Diego.

With this, they manage to lure Gorilla Franklin into another area to take care of the young dog in peace.

Employees of the animal protection organization "San Diego County Humane Society" enter the enclosure and collect the somewhat worn-out looking but still completely uninjured four-legged friend.

Gorilla chases dog: Luckily nobody was hurt

On their Twitter account, they say: "We named it 'Mighty Joe Young.'

We're so glad no one was hurt."

Unfortunately, the high-spirited rascal is not chipped - who he belongs to cannot be said with certainty.

It could also be a stray.

"He's an incredibly friendly and great dog."

The organization released an update the next morning, assuring concerned zoo visitors that the dog is doing well.

Apart from a few ticks and other pests, the vets couldn't find anything.

Some people wanted to adopt the cute stray right away.

However, the San Diego Humane Society asks for a little patience, but intends to provide new updates shortly.
